Historical Spots Around Austin

Travis County is home to Texas’ capital, Austin. Due to the vast amount of history and historical sites, one can spend numerous days exploring all the history Texas has to offer. Here is a list of a few historical sites around Austin.

1. Texas Capitol

The Texas Capitol, a building built in the late 1800’s, is home to the state’s government and is still actively in use today. The building sites on small plot of land with many trees and monuments. The Texas Capitol is full of rich history, not only of Austin, but also Texas. This place features a museum uncovering Texas’s history and architecture. They offer tours, a variety of exhibits, activities, and projects. You can even rent a part of the building for your next event!

2. Twin Creeks Historic Park

The John M. King Log House, built in the mid eighteen hundreds, sits on a 46-acre park. Twin Creeks Historic Park not only features this house, but also a cave, a creek, rock middens, many trees, and greenareas. This park also has a trail, that in certain areas, runs along a rocky creek. If you are looking for an outdoor space to cool off in, this is the place to be.

3. Sneed House

The Sneed House was a limestone plantation house outside of Austin. The house burnt down, but what still remains is the limestone walls that the house was constructed of. The place is now surrounded by new developments, however, still sits on its original land.

4. Pioneer Farms

North of Austin is Pioneer Farms, which brings Texas history alive. This farm has a variety of hands-on activities that show you how past life in Texas was lived. They offer tours of the farm to educate you on thehistory of the place along with all the nature that lives on the land like the farm animals. There are workshops for archery, gardening, blacksmithing, weaving,open hearth cooking, and so forth, that show you how people lived and worked inthe past. Once you leave the farm, you will have a learned a new skill that you can tell your friends about at home.

5. Old Bakery & Artisan Emporium

The Old Bakery & Artisan Emporium, a historical landmark, is in downtown Austin. The building was originally built by a Swedishbaker, who sold his baked goods in the building. Now this place features artand crafts from local artists for sale, along with an art gallery and a visitor information center. The inside of the building still has some of its original architectural features.

6.  Texas Governor’s Mansion

This house has been home to the governors of Texas since themid-19th century. It burned a few years ago, however, has been fully restored to its former glory. The inside of the mansion contains architectural features of the 19^th century with old paintings and furnishings. Tours can be both guided and self-guided. The mansion is located in Austin and is surrounded by trees and downtown buildings.

Due to the vast amount of nature Texas has to offer, there is a variety of historical parks and open preserves that are great for walking and hiking. Historical spots in Texas are everywhere. Plan a few spots and enjoy what they offer.
