Historic Texas is a working archive of the places that make up this state. Every county, every county seat, and thousands of towns and communities that never made it onto a modern map. Founding dates, settlement stories, courthouse histories, cemeteries, old photographs, postcards and maps, kept in one place and organised the way people actually look for them.
The backbone is public record. Texas state historical markers, published county histories, census returns, early gazetteers and period accounts written by people who were there. On top of that sits material contributed by families and local historical societies, photographs and recollections that exist nowhere else. Where a passage comes from a named source, that source is credited in the text.
A submission needs a source before it goes up. A marker text, a county history, a census entry, a deed, a dated photograph. Where accounts disagree, the page says so rather than picking the tidier version. Coverage is uneven by design, because the record itself is uneven. A county seat with newspapers and published histories leaves far more behind than a settlement that lasted forty years and never had either.
